Ice Skating

Milt Cunningham:My father was responsible for the ponds on vacant lots around town. He got the city to build a berm of 12 to 18 inches around various vacant lots, then flood them when the cold weather hit, and every kid in town had a skating rink within walking distance of his home.

Ethel Woods Sheets:Does anyone remember the ice skating parties I had at our pond in front of the house out in the country? We
used to play Fox and Geese and Crack the Whip. You didn't want to be on the end of that.

Clara Blakeman Lehman:We also skated a lot and I had been thinking about writing something about skating before Ethel wrote. We skated at the corner of Sheridan Ave. and 6th Street, in front of the old hospital (later to become Sheridan College buildings). We also played Fox and Geese and Crack the Whip and we burned old tires.Oh,how they stunk!Remember how great it was to get the thrown-out Christmas trees to burn for a couple of weeks?

Sam Day:I also remember the ice skating in Sheridan.I used to skate at the pond down at the end of Burkitt Street. We had fun playing Crack the Whip.Later on when I was old enough to drive,we used to skate up on the ponds behind where the new high school is.We would burn those rubber tires and really make a stink.I also remember skating on a pond down near where Thornrider baseball stadium was.

Lloyd Garretson: Does anyone remember the LaClede Street gang? It was a group from up on the hill and included Gene Wakefield,Oden Liming,Skip Fisher,Bill Baldwin, the Martini girls, Irene Techiner,Vern Gleason and Duane Morgan.  We did lots of ice skating over at the ponds behind the new hospital, which was not there in those days. The ponds I am talking about were the holly ponds. We also played and skated on flooded ponds around town. The best one was at the entrance to the city park.We would burn rubber tires and Mom would hardly let us into the house because we smelled like burnt rubber. Those were the good old days.

Sally Jensen Brouillette, 1952: This is Bing's other half. He constantly amazes me about the stuff he remembers from way back when. The only problem is he can't remember what he had for lunch or even if he had lunch.I used to skate on the river across from my house.
