Jean and I moved back to Sheridan in '94' after living in Maine and teaching Industrial Arts for twenty years in a mountain community, Rangeley, right on the edge of several large lakes.  Ski area 7 miles from school and able to ride snowmachine to school or Canada; also ride through town on same during the winter. Four season town with excellent fly fishing. My kids don't know how to use a spin outfit.
I retired from teaching when the new 'Super.' stated that I.A. was not a necessary classroom course for the education of young people.  Also Business and Home Ec. axed at the same time.  I have been a carpenter and in lumber sales since moving. Active in the Masons and Shrine.
We have six children and 10 grans the newest, which I haven't seen, born Jan. 31,2000.

We are leaving today to visit our youngest daughter, the mother of the grand daughters, in Kuwait. She is married to a Frenchman who manages pastry and coffee shops in Kuwait City. Enjoy keeping

Fred Diener, 1941,
Joe Maier told me about the site and I am looking forward to seeing news of Sheridan and Sheridan people although I have not lived there since 1941 and I probabally won't know many of the people.  I was sorry to hear of Irene Schlattman's death.  She was a classmate of mine.
I have lived in Seattle since leaving Sheridan except for time in the service during WW2 and the Korean War.  I am married, Have a son and a daughter and have been retired from the Burlington Northern for 20 years.  My, how time does fly.

My husband, Roland and I live in beautiful Bozeman, Montana.  We've lived here for 8 years and bought a rental store the second year here.  Roland is very ambitious and the banks were very generous so we now have 4 stores in different small towns around Montana.  We have a daughter,  23and studying to be a paramedic; a son and heading towards a business degree; and another daughter, who's 21and she's getting her LPN.  All are now home for the summer....we love it, but we're having to get a larger water heater!  They take longer showers the older they get!
I worked for Monatana State University for 5 years and am now retired.  I do some volunteer work at the hospital and enjoy that very much.  We live outside of Bozeman on 20 acres and have a gorgeous view of the mountains surrounding the valley.  The skiing, fishing, hunting, hiking and horseback riding is wonderful and the reason most people move here.  Eventually, my husband would like to be a full time rancher and work 24 hours out of the day instead of just 16 at the rental stores!
My mother, Kathy, didn't attend SHS but my dad did...he's got some stories!  We celebrate our birthday's on the same day-I was a present he couldn't return!  He will turn 87 years old and is doing very well.  Mom has passed away a number of years ago from cancer.

ATLEY RALSTON, 1951
How nice to hear your kind words about my saxophone playing. I have not played it since college, but have continued piano, a little singing and lots of appreciation of music. Music has enriched my life, and among those I thank constantly are Mr.. Avery, Mr.. Becker, and Miss Barnes. We were so lucky to have had them at SHS.
You asked about what happened to me after SHS. I went to Whitman College, U of Washington medical school, Kansas City Internship, ophthalmology residency in Detroit, Army Dr. in Alabama, ophthalmology practice in Wash.State until retirement in 1993. Married a beautiful Washington lady in 1958, and have 4 children and 3 grandchildren. Presently taking piano lessons, teach at the U
of W Medical School a little, manage my retirement investments, play quite a bit of golf, and do a lot of family stuff.... a great life.
Now how about you? How did you get so far East ?
Oh, I agree with you about the Big Horn Mountains. They still are the best.Washington has lots and lots of mountains, but I still prefer the Big Horns.Have been on two pack trips in the Big Horns in the last 10 years. Had a wonderful time fly fishing. I was in Sheridan earlier this month forgraveside services for my mother. Our  town was even pretty in Jan.

Elizabeth Louise Bellows Rice, 1941

I am Elizabeth Louise (Bellows) Rice, known in high school as "Betty Bellows".  Born in Sheridan, Wyoming at home on Park Street.  I graduated in 1941 from Sheridan High School where the Bronkette of that year prophesied that I would become the Editor of the New York Times.
I attended the University of Denver two years, and in the spring of 1943 I met Howard Rice, my husband-to-be, a native of southern Illinois, who was stationed on campus as an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Force.  My Junior year I transferred to the University of Redlands (CA) for one semester to be near my parents who had moved to California to take jobs in wartime Defense plants.  I worked for several months as a driller/riveter making wing tips for B-24 Bombers.  A real "Rosie the Riveter".  I did not earn a degree, opting to marry instead.
Howard and I were married in 1944 in Yuma, Arizona where he was stationed for about a year in the Training Command before being sent overseas in the Occupation of Japan and Korea at the end of the fighting war. During that time I, with our infant son, returned to my parent's home in California.
After Howard was discharged as a 1st. Lieut., we spent one year in Sheridan while he worked for my brother Kenneth (Kacy) Bellows in construction work.  During that time our special friends, among others, were fellow classmates of mine, Charlie and Helen (Foster) Harbel, still of Sheridan, and Bob and Nanette Miller, both deceased.  Then we moved to Montana for four years while Howard earned his degree in Mining Engineering on the GI Bill at the then Montana School of Mines in Butte.  Our only daughter was born there.
Howard was hired by ASARCO and we moved to one of the properties in Vanadium, New Mexico.  Our third child, a second son, was born in Silver City.  From there we were transferred to a gold mine in Nicaragua, Central America where we lived for four years.
Wanting our children to experience school and life in the States, we returned "home" to Arizona and a copper mine at Silver Bell where we lived for the next ten years.  The urge to once again wander took us back to Tyrone, New Mexocp, an Open Pit copper mine owned by Phelps Dodge Corporation, for a couple of years.  But still having itchy feet, we spent seven months in North Carolina at an underground tungsten mine, before deciding we really belonged in the west, and returned once again to Arizona, Morenci Branch of PD where, after 14 years, Howard took early retirement in 1984.  Since that time we have split each year between Alpine, located in the mountains at over 8000 feet elevation, during summertime, and Thatcher, just around the corner from a beautiful golf course, in the winters.
Our three "children" live in Arizona.  They are by training an engineer, an educator, and an attorney.  Our four grandchildren are: one, an attorney in New York City, another in Law School in Pennsylvania, a third taking Physical Therapy training in Flagstaff, AZ and the fourth preparing to enter the third year of college in California.
I  have had various types of employment through the years, including baby sitting and demonstrating Folgers coffee through the Butte days, driving a school bus and clerking in the offices of a school, the mines, a CPA.  I have been a Girl Scout leader and active in church and community.  Howard is an avid golfer and my hobby is genealogy.  We both enjoy e-mail and the contacts we can make on the Internet.  We have traveled coast to coast, spent a vacation in Britain, and are planning a Cruisetour to Alaska this coming May.
But I never made it to New York, nor worked in a newspaper office.  So much for Prophecy! - Beth Rice a.k.a. Betty Bello

RON ARNOLD 1952

I was born in Sheridan in 1934, 40 minutes ahead of my twin
brother, Donold. We resided in Sheridan through our school years,
having attended Taylor, Coffeen, Central, Hill and High schools. I
was involved in a motorcycle-car accident in December of my
Freshman year. Due to the injuries incurred, I did not return to
classes.

In October of the following year I joined the Navy and pursued
my G.E.D. through the United States States Armed Forces Institute.
After being discharged I worked in and around Wyoming on
various construction projects and spent several months in Alaska
as a driller for a seismograph corporation.

I was married in 1960 and we had three children, two sons and
one daughter. In the early 60's, we moved to Southern California
where I worked as an auto mechanic, aircraft machinist and in
Security.

In 1970, we moved back to Wyoming where I joined the Gillette
Police Force. Resigning that position, I then went to work in the oil
fields. Soon after we moved to Idaho where I accepted a position
with the YMCA as Lifeguard, Swim and Diving Instructor. I
obtained my Water Safety Instructors certification and taught
Water Safety.

We were divorced in 1975 and I returned to the oil fields in the Gillette area. In 1980, I moved to Roundup, Mt. where I was involved with overseeing the drilling, as well as the completion, production and shipping for a number of oil wells in the area.

In 1980, I moved to Boise, Idaho where I was employed as
Building & Grounds Maintenance Supervisor for a private club for
a period of three years. Leaving that, I accepted a position as
Superintendent of Public Works for the City of Oakville,
Washington. I soon tired of trying to please the Mayor, the council
members and the residents, who all had different ideas, and
resigned my position there and returned to Boise, Idaho where I
contracted work with a privately owned pay-telephone business for
several years.

In the early 90's, I moved to Southern Oregon and eventually
accepted employment managing a 50-space recreational park on
the Oregon Coast. I held that position for four years, retiring in
July of 1998.

I still reside at this park. I am enjoying the great salmon and
steelhead fishing in the river just 35 feet out my back door. I
spend as much time as possible and affordable traveling; and enjoy
contacts with my friends in Cyberspace on my computer.

SARA BASSETT ARY, 1956
I attended Sheridan College and Chadron State where I received a degree in education.  I have been teaching every since.  No, I am not retired yet, but am giving it serious thought.  I presently am the Computer/ Literacy Lab instructor and Building Tech Cooridnator at Tongue River Elementary in Ranchester, Wyoming.  I left the regular classroom two years ago to take this position.I work with K-5 students.  I live in Sheridan on the property that belonged to my parents during their lifetimes.

I have taught for 39 years.  With the exception of the last two years, it
has all been in a regular classroom.  Over the years, I have taught all
grades except kindergarten.  My first job was in Topeka, Kansas.  From
there I went to Fort Collins, Colorado and then to a small community in the Colorado mountains called Walden.  We returned to Sheridan in 1985 to take care of my mother.

I have been married three times.  I have two stepchildren and five
stepgranchildren that I like to think of as my own.  They range in age from early 20's to 9.

What got me involved in SHS Express was an email from a complete stranger inquiring about a cousin of mine.  I guess he got my name from the website, but I am not sure how he obtained my Email address.  I am also, all of a sudden, hearing from Tom Tynan.  We are 3rd cousins and don't live too far apart on Big Goose.  I have to assume he got my Email address the same place as Milt Cunningham did.  Anyway, I'm glad that I joined the rest ofyou.

I'll let you know if I can be of any help to you.  I am addicted to
computers, but at present, I'm a novice at web pages.  If I come up with
anything for the site, I will be in touch.

  BETTY SNODGRASS MAY,  1952

I was born in 1934 in Sheridan in the house on 4th street where Bill Preston later lived with his family.  When I was almost two we moved to a little house on N. Main Street where I lived until 19 years of age (when I got married.)  I graduated in 1952 at the ripe old age of 17.  While still in high school, I worked at Burdens Grocery, ña little corner grocery storeî, and at the first self-serve service station that Sheridan had.  The service station was right next door to my house and Burdens Grocery was across the side street.  I worked at the store from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m., then ran across the street to work at the station from 7:00 until 10:00 p.m.  Most everyone will remember the service station because they would come in and ask for fifty cents or a dollarÍs worth of gas and then drive up and down Main Street all evening.  Due to going to school full time, two after-school jobs was just too much, so I only worked at the service station for about three months.
After being married we moved a LOT. Went from Sheridan to Gillette to Casper, then back to Sheridan. Then it was off to Gillette again, & back to Sheridan. After a couple more moves, we ended up out in Mesa, Arizona where Doris Drown Burr lives. It was due to Doris that I moved there. I even worked for Doris and her husband Curt. Then it was off to Lake Havasu City and then back to Mesa where I worked for Bank of America for five years and then PacifiCare of Az (an HMO) for two years.æ Now I live in Buffalo. I was working at the Bronze River Foundry but 20 of us got laid off. ( I am currently looking for work.)
During the time in Lake Havasu and after a total of 37 years, I went through a divorce. Helped fill the Colorado River with the tears that were shed, but pulled myself up by my boot straps and found out life can be beautiful even though I thought the most important thing in the world was to be married.
I am very active in my church which most of you have already figured out. I love to write poetry and have written a small or short book for women going through transition. There have been many ups and downs in life but every time there is a down, it makes the ups a much better place for me.  I had no idea that I would ever be able to write even though it was something that had been a heartÍs desire for a long time. Have had only one poem published , partly because I do not know how to go about getting all this done,  but hopefully the poems will be put into a book and published at a later date .
Anyway after all the travels and big moves it seems so wonderful to be back in beautiful Buffalo, Wyoming. Even wrote a poem about that. It is so wonderful to live in a place where a man will open the door for you and where you can drive down the highway and not wonder who you might have offended. (I am not a city girl. Just a country girl at heart.) A population of 3000 is plenty for me.
I have two children, my oldest being a girl, and the second a son. I am now the grandmother to five wonderful children, three girls and two boys, plus one great-grandson.  As of this coming Feb.  my great-grandson will be two years old. That does not seem possible; but then where do the years go?
My children's names are Laura, Roy Jr. and his wonderful wife Cindy. Laura has Candice who is the mother of Kalib. Roy has Curston and Ashley with two stepchildren, Elizabeth and Matthew.
Well that is my long tale of the last almost 48 years. Just wanted to say how wonderful this site has been and how much I have enjoyed all your comments, bios and the stories such as Hot Tamale Louie and the teachers. "We have come a long way baby."  Betty  1/15/00
